What to eat in London UK

I recently posted a blog about my first visit to London (read about it here) and all the sightseeing I did.  Now anyone who knows me will know that I am serious about food, which is why I included EAT in the title of my blog in the first place.  So obviously I would have to write a blog post about what I ate, right… right?

To me travel is all about emerging into a culture, therefore finding out more about their history, seeing how they go about their daily lives and finally tasting their food and drinks. Now, this is not always a pleasant experience.  On my trip to Turkey, I absolutely hated the food and literally only ate bread the whole of my trip.  But in London, I was pleasantly surprised.  I expected bland, uninteresting food but I am happy to report that I was very wrong!

The restaurants:

The Riviera (Gabriels Warf) – Only had drinks but loved the location right next to the water!

Pizza express – I know it’s a chain but their pizza was delish! And so was the little dough balls for starters, yum.IMG_6030

Slug & Lettuce (Borough High street) – Had really good eggs benedict there but the service was a bit slow. IMG_6035

Côte Bistro (Covent Garden) – I had my first ever pork belly there and it was AMAZING!  Unfortunately, I never took a photo and I will regret it until the day I die!

Bodean’s BBQ – I know, it’s American and who eats American food when in London? Well, I do and I don’t even feel bad for it because I had the best burger I’ve ever tasted in my life at this place.  We had to wait about 45 mins for a table but oh so worth it! IMG_6319

Gourmet Pizza Co (Gabriels Warf) – Yes Pizza again because I love pizza and could probably eat it every day!  Especially pizza like this… IMG_6699

The Beaten docket – Our last meal in London.  Cheap breakfast and really good!

El Mexicana (Oxford street) – I had my first ever burrito there.  I now make burritos at home to help with the cravings.

Kilburn Ironworks – Cosy little place in Cricklewood but not worthy of the title “Last dinner in London”

The Pubs:

The Watermans Arms (Windsor)

Old Thameside Inn – First pub in London I visited.  Now I’m in the mood for beer.

Founders Arms – Love the location right on the Thames.

The Anchor pubIMG_5912

Silver Cross Pub – At this pub, I had the best meal of my whole trip (also the most expensive).  Their pies are buttery little beef filled pillows that melt in your mouth.  I find myself daydreaming about those pies – fuck, I could marry those pies!IMG_6445

The Royal Oak – This is the type of snack you need when drinking beer, ALWAYS!

The Shakespeare (Victoria)

The Old Swan (Kensington)

Other stuff I ate (and drank)

Starbucks – We don’t have Starbucks in South Africa and I just had to indulge in a Caramel Frappuccino and a Pumpkin Spice Latte and to be honest, I would spend that horrific amount of money again any day to spoil myself, so no regrets here.IMG_5870

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts – Reese’s Peanut butter to be exact.  If you are a peanut butter lover, you definitely need these in your life!

Food at Borough Market – Now in my previous post I did share some pictures of food from Borough Market but I didn’t get to taste it all.  What I did taste was my first ever Scottish Egg – honestly, though, I wasn’t impressed and for £4.50 I felt it was a bit of a ripoff.  I also had beef pie with red wine gravy which would have tasted way more amazing if I had extra salt.

Lunch special from Sainsbury’s – This I would do more often if I ever visit London again. For about £3, you get a sandwich, juice and a snack – what a bargain.  Now eat that in a park somewhere and you will have yourself a pretty good time!IMG_6784

I already have a list of restaurants and pubs I want to visit on my next trip, like Fifteen (Jamie Oliver) and The Sherlock Holmes pub.  As well as a few coffee shops like Monmouth, Black and Blue and Blue Sheep.  Until then I’ll just daydream and Pin away.
